Knowing the potential assets and challenges that face us as leaders can be closely examined by analyzing your Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® personality type. Myers-Briggs® ISTJ’s prosper from their desire to complete a task with patience and precision, holding back none of their energy or time, resulting in a true leader.  For our purposes, we will define leadership as “accomplishing change through the efforts of others”. (Richmond, 2008, CPP Inc.) Leaders tend to focus on three main activities in order to achieve leadership, starting with “setting a direction for the organization”, followed by “inspiring others to work towards that direction” and ultimately “mobilizing the effective accomplishment of goals”. (Richmond, 2008, CPP Inc.) ISTJ’s approach each action through a unique methodology that embraces their personality type preferences, allowing them to develop their own leadership style. (Richmond, 2008, CPP Inc.)

ISTJ’s flourish by embracing their ability to logically approach a situation and steadily work towards it by planning ahead, focusing on priorities and defining desired end points to better build future goals. ISTJ types then use their innate ability to value loyalty to then focus on inspiring others. For example, due to an ISTJ’s enjoyment in making everything orderly and organized, they are then able to accurately track progress in order to help motivate and encourage action. Their thoroughness and dependability also contribute to their leadership successes, as it helps them to easily find the most efficient and practical way to accomplish a task. (Richmond, 2008, CPP Inc.)

MBTI Test ISTJ’s make excellent leaders. This being said, ISTJ personality types aren’t without their challenges in leadership. ISTJ leaders often seem unenthusiastic about others’ ideas, especially when considering integrating them into their pre-existing plans. In addition, Myers-Briggs ISTJ types frequently struggle with communicating how important it is to them to be a part of an organization, seeming detached and less interested, which can result in others viewing them as unappreciative and unapproachable. As an ISTJ, it is very important to additionally try not to focus on seeing all the ways things can fail, but instead focus on the results, thus avoiding discouraging others. (Richmond, 2008, CPP Inc.)

ISTJs provide a strong backbone to an organization through their quality of work, dedication and loyalty, and inimitable contributions. All things said and done, an ISTJ MBTI Test personality type makes for a superb leader, bringing to the table distinct attributes and unique gifts that set them apart from others.
