ISTJ Personality Type And Project Management

Depending on your Myers-Briggs® Test Personality Type, you may find that you work best at different stages of a project or in different roles in a group. By learning about how your group’s Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® Types best work when it comes to completing projects, you can set yourself up from success at the beginning, completing tasks and fulfilling roles that perfectly suit your and your group’s strengths. This week, we’ll focus on how the Introverted Sensing with Extraverted Thinking (ISTJ) Types work when it comes to Project Management.

As per the introduction, a project is defined as “a temporary endeavor, undertaken to create a unique product or service,” with “a definite beginning and a definite end.” (Tucker, 2008, CPP) ISTJ Type project teams (that is, the overall type of the project’s members) are usually sensible, accountable, and highly meticulous and coordinated.

ISTJ project types are characterized by their favoring of Introversion, Sensing, Thinking and Judging, meaning that the team working on this project is often:

  • A smaller group or a single individual who prefer(s) to formulate plans before discussing with the other members or outside influencers, and who use(s) written forms of communication to discuss ideas, schedules, etc. (I)
  • Focusing on the potential beneficial outcome of the project, using facts and logic to find efficient strategies and results, and using clearly defined parameters to review the accomplishments of the project (S)
  • Viewing the project on a logical, objective level, using reasoning to make decisions and analyzing their methods/plan to make sure it’s the most efficient and cost-effective way of completing the project (T)
  • Keeping an organized plan and timetable, making sure not to procrastinate (J) (Tucker, 2008, CPP)

Furthermore, Myers-Briggs Test ISTJ Types  have their own specific definition for a project that focuses on the methodology and logical progression of the product, which they map out ahead of time and follow to a T.

ISTJ’s organize their projects into broken-down duties that will eventually lead to the completion of a larger problem, which can sometimes mean that they find difficulty in thinking about the future end product as a whole. They’re incredible efficient when it comes to managing time, money, and jobs, and are always aware of who fulfills which tasks and roles. They are known to think about the project itself over those who are affected by it—at least, until the end stages. (Tucker, 2008, CPP)

The structuring of project objectives into clearly defined roles, duties, and actions is an ISTJ team’s forte. Because their decisions are based on logic, they are also often very unambiguous when discussing their findings and thinking about their next move.

It behooves Myers-Briggs Test ISTJ Types to work toward keeping an open mind about the project’s underlying themes, wider-spread goals, and new, incoming information from outside sources. (Tucker, 2008, CPP) Otherwise, ISTJ Types may find themselves missing new ideas and not taking advantage of all of the information available to them. By opening themselves up to new ideas and broader forms of communication, ISTJ project teams can get the most out of their project.
