ISTJ Personality Type and Innovation

Each Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® Personality Type has its own way of creating ideas and seeing those ideas come to fruition. Honing in on your Myers-Briggs® Test Type’s strengths and weaknesses in the field of innovation can help you focus your energies on specific stages, areas, and roles in creative moments. This week, we’ll explore how the Introverted Sensing with Extraverted Thinking (ISTJ) Type best innovates.

As mentioned in the introduction to this series, the innovation that we are speaking of is linked to creativity, or the thinking of new ideas, and the implementation of those ideas. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP) For the Myers-Briggs ISTJ Personality Type, innovation often comes in the form of new ways to do something (such as a task) in a more proficient way.

MBTI® ISTJ innovators are often described as being responsible, pragmatic, and meticulous. They prefer to work in the Delivery phase of the Innovation Process, meaning that they enjoy the actual process of solving a problem and seeing the results of their innovative development. When choosing which innovative projects to take on,  those having the ISTJ Personality Type usually lean toward those that involve taking something that already works and making it that much better. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

The logical minds of Myers-Briggs ISTJ Personality Types work well in innovative arenas, and they commit themselves to seeing something through to the end. They are incredibly organized in their approach to innovation, planning out each stage. They use their high level of reasoning skills to think through various options instead of rushing into things.  ISTJ Types like everything to be spelled out from the get-go so that they can focus their time on actually making the change/executing the innovation, whatever it may be. Individuals who exhibit the Myers-Briggs Test ISTJ Personality Type also tend to prefer projects with logical and advantageous results. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

Occasionally, certain instances and situations create roadblocks for the ISTJ Types innovation. This can include tunnel vision (only focusing on one possible innovation), doubt in principals that have not yet been fully tested to the ISTJ Personality Types high standards, lack of desire to generate ideas, and not seeing the larger picture of the idea as a whole. Furthermore, the ISTJ Personality Type may find themselves uncomfortable when certain things are requested/expected of them. They may find it difficult when asked to break away from their original idea toward other options or when asked to not look at past information or methods for the future. Working by themselves and operating without clear-cut principles and information is also tough for ISTJ assessed types. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

By recognizing these difficulties and working beyond them, those having the ISTJ Type preference can work toward becoming better and more open-minded innovators. Myers-Briggs ISTJ Types should push themselves to be part of the idea-making process, promote innovation even when methods have worked in the past, and banish doubt due to lack of facts from the idea-generation process.

Furthermore, Individuals who prefer the ISTJ Type should surround themselves with people who understand and are grateful for their devotion to facts and those who recompense them with each small completion and success that occurs. By playing on the above strengths and working on broadening their scope of the innovation process, ISTJ Myers-Briggs Test Types can become excellent innovators at each stage. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)
