Certain Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI test) personality types are better suited for specific careers than others, based on their qualities and underlying tendencies. In this way, it makes sense that Introverted-Intuitive-Thinking-Judging (INTJ) Myers-Briggs test types would fit well as chemical engineers, as they are incredibly inventive and creative, and enjoy seeing their efforts through to the end.

Chemical engineers spend their working hours on a variety of tasks, often involving creating new chemicals or products that make human life or technology easier, such as newly developed energy sources, synthetic materials, and cleaning materials, all through the combination of various components of chemistry, physics, and engineering. They work closely with chemical substances and manipulate them to achieve specific goals, for instance, developing lower-cost ways of achieving the same production. In addition, they develop and implement safety procedures necessary to the use of such new innovations and also determine the manner in which they can be implemented with optimal effectiveness and efficiency. Engineers who work on university projects often have a level of flexibility associated with a research setting. However, if the chemical engineer works exclusively for a chemical plant, they will often help to develop and design equipment for their employer as well.

In order to accomplish these tasks, chemical engineers often must complete the following duties on a day-to-day basis: Create emergency protocols to make sure that everyone is safe in the case of an accident; develop new ways to make current equipment run more smoothly or effectively; create the optimal step-by-step procedure, ensuring that each step of a process is in the correct order for optimization; test the performance of their current processes; and research the ability to create new chemically designed materials. In many cases, they may also need to manage a team of researchers or work with others on the same project.

With such a machine-based career, it is imperative that INTJ’s are versed in a variety of tools and machines, such as ultrafiltration equipment, chromatographic scanners, and mixing equipment. Knowledge of pertinent software, including analytical engineering software, computer assisted design software, database user interface and query software, and spreadsheet software is also important.

The inert skills needed to excel at this career include a high-functioning knowledge of engineering, technology, chemistry, math, physics, design, computers, and mechanics. Additionally, complex reasoning skills, strong communication skills, and continuous learning are also vital. A Bachelor’s degree is almost always needed for a career in this occupation, although some post-graduate work is often encouraged, as the experience obtained will help them use similar equipment and perform similar duties in the working world.
