Sometimes, they may also produce storyboards or flows, particularly for more complex stories which may take a longer time to report, or which may need to be told in multiple segments. Broadcast News Analysts also identify and edit supporting material to ensure that the story is cohesive while also fitting into the allotted time and space. Finally, Broadcast News Analysts present news stories and broadcast them with videotaped or audio-recorded segments, including integrating transmissions from reporters who are at the scene.

In order to be successful, Broadcast News Analysts use a variety of different tools and technologies, including audio-video editing and recording consoles, notebook and desktop computers, headphones, microphones and other recording equipment, and more. They also use specialized software, including analytical applications like Neilsen Arianna, music or sound editing software like Audion Laboratories VoxPro, and project management software such as Desktop Technologies NewsBoss. As with many office positions, Broadcast News Analysts also need to have a mastery of Microsoft Office, Internet Browsers, and E-mail interfaces.

In addition to this technical expertise, Broadcast News Analysts should have strong communications and media skills, including the ability to work in multiple media such as digital, audio, video, and text. They also require familiarity with telecommunications systems as well as computers and electronics. Because of the significant amount of writing they must complete, strong English communication skills, especially in writing, are essential to success as a Broadcast News Analyst. Most Broadcast News Analysts hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university (75%). An additional 14% hold an Associate’s Degree. Just 7% of Broadcast News Analysts hold a High School Diploma or equivalent with no further professional college degree. A level of higher education is important to develop the technical knowledge and critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential to be a great fit for this career.

The states with the highest average salaries are Nevada, Virginia, Indiana, and Wisconsin, all of which are well above $60,000 per year. The top 10% of analysts in Nevada earn nearly $190,000, while Indiana follows close behind at $170,000. On the other hand, analysts in the nearby state of Colorado earn an average of just $40,990 per year, with even the best paid earning under $130,000. The employment of Broadcast News Analysts is also slowly but steadily declining, with a 13% decline projected before 2024. Just 160 new jobs are expected to open per year across the country.
