Nearly a century in the making, The Strong Interest Inventory® Assessment is among the most comprehensive career coaching resources in the world. The Inventory compares Assessment responses to those of successful professionals in particular fields in which responders are found to have interest in. They enjoy expressing themselves in their work and thrive when given the opportunity to allow others to do the same.
Foreign Language and Literature Teachers are responsible for teaching courses in languages and literatures other than English, including American Sign Language (ASL) or other languages spoken around the world. In order to successfully teach these courses, Foreign Language and Literature Teachers must complete many different administrative, planning, and pedagogical tasks, including but not limited to preparing course materials (such as syllabi, homework assignments, presentation materials, and handouts), evaluating and providing feedback on students work (including class participation, assignments, and papers), and moderating classroom discourse. When necessary, they produce or revise curricula and other course materials, as well as plan lessons and consider the best methods and techniques for delivering particular content to students. Teachers must also maintain any records required by the school at which they work, including student attendance records, grades, and more.
Instructors in higher education settings, including at the university undergraduate and graduate levels, instruct students in cultural considerations of languages or of the countries in which they are spoken, as well as hold office hours to assist students. University-level instructors also generally play an active role in advising students in their academic and professional futures, and also conduct research to expand particular areas of knowledge related to their expertise. In some cases, such instructors may also serve as consultants for external parties, participate in campus or community events, or perform administrative duties.
Foreign Language and Literature Teachers often use many kinds of audiovisual and presentation tools, including MP3 players, computers, cameras and camcorders, projectors, tablet computers, and so on, in addition to standard office software, such as photocopiers, inkjet printers, fax machines, and the like. Their software needs are also fairly straightforward, and often includes Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), as well as web browser software. They may also use learning management systems, such as Canvas or Blackboard, or communications software like Zoom. In some cases, sound or video editing software such as Audacity may be necessary, but in general instructors are provided with these materials.
Foreign Language and Literature Teachers need to have mastered English as well as the foreign language(s) they are teaching. Typically, a background in the history, sociology, and anthropology of the regions in which their language(s) of expertise are spoken is also required. For this reason, many positions as Foreign Language and Literature Teachers require a Graduate Degree. Over 50% of Foreign Language and Literatures Instructors hold a Master’s Degree, while over 30% hold a Doctorate Degree. Extensive experience developing instructional materials, delivering instructional content, and conducting research in scholarly settings are necessary in order to be a successful Foreign Language and Literature Teacher in a post-secondary setting.
