The Strong Interest Inventory® is for many people the first step toward choosing a career that fits their professional strengths, personality, and lifestyle preferences. This comprehensive assessment evaluates multiple different aspects of an individual, and then it refers them to one to three of six Theme Code Categories, each of which contains different careers that share a certain set of characteristics. For example, being a Nursing Instructor or Teacher is considered part of The Strong Interest Inventory® Social Theme Code Category of Careers because it involves instructing and communicating with others to help them reach their goals.

Nursing Instructors demonstrate and teach patient care to nursing students in classrooms or clinical units. Professionals in this career might teach full time or might conduct research or provide patient care in addition to their teaching responsibilities. In some ways, their teaching responsibilities are much like those of any other educational professional; Nursing Instructors must advise students, prepare course materials (e.g., syllabi, homework assignments, handouts etc.), initiate and moderate classroom discussions, and maintain attendance records. Like other higher education professionals, they also may need to participate in campus or community events or perform administrative duties, such as serving as a department head.

However, Nursing Instructors may also need to supervise laboratory or clinical work, supervise undergraduate or graduate instructors or researchers, demonstrate patient care in clinical units of hospitals, mentor other factor faculty members, serve on academic committees, and write grant proposals. Like other medical professionals, Nursing Instructors have a number of professional responsibilities, including reading current literature and attending professional and research conferences. In other words, their responsibilities combine those of medical professionals and higher education faculty members.

Successful Nursing Instructors must be comfortable with computers, including medical software (e.g., MEDITECH) and educational software (e.g., Blackboard Learn, LMS, Moodle, interactive learning software), in addition to Microsoft Office Suite. In some cases, they may also need to be comfortable with web page creation and editing software. Those who are considering pursing nursing education as a career should try to become comfortable using computers in their professional lives.

In addition to these technical skills, Nursing Instructors should also have an extensive understanding of medicine, education, and customer service, and should be able to speak and communicate their knowledge to others in a clear, concise fashion. Most Nursing Instructors are highly educated and hold a Master’s Degree (52%) or Doctoral Degree (37%). In addition, due to the significant amount of communication inherent in their daily duties, they have well-developed active listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

The median salary for a Nursing Instructor is $71,260. However, in New York and California, the average salary approaches $90,000, while in much of the central United States, including the Dakotas, Kansas, and Oklahoma, salaries can be under $60,000 annually.
