The Strong Interest Inventory® Assessment examines and analyzes individuals’ personal interests and workplace preferences in order to help them find a career where they can use their skills and which they will find personally fulfilling. The first step is administering a comprehensive assessment, the results of which are carefully compared to a database of others’ responses. Then, the individual is matched to one to three of six categories of careers, each of which is characterized by different features. For example, Conventional Theme Code Careers typically involve attention to detail and organization. The Strong Interest Inventory® Assessment is a long-standing starting point for people who are trying to find a career that is a good fit for them.
Database Administrators are one example of a Conventional Career. Database Administrators are responsible for administering, testing, installing, and updating computer databases. This process might involve correcting errors or making necessary modifications, as well as planning and implementing security measures to safeguard information, which may include registering users and regulating user access levels or clearance levels for each segment of the database. Additional responsibilities may include revising database management system manuals, revising definitions of data, identifying and evaluating industry trends in database systems, and selecting and entering codes to monitor database performance. Depending on the size of the company or organization, and ultimately the size of its databases, Database Administrators may work collaboratively with other professionals, such as software engineers or business intelligence units, in addition to a project team in order to coordinate database development and determine the scope, limitations, and budget of a given venture.
Most work that Database Administrators do involves interacting with computers and processing or analyzing information by compiling, coding, calculating, or verifying information or data. They also engage in complex problem solving that involves high-level critical thinking skills as well as being familiar with a broad range of software, including but not limited to access software (e.g., Citrix), clustering software (e.g., Oracle Real Application Cluster RAC), computer-aided design software (e.g., Dassault Systemes CATIA), network security and virtual private network (VPN) software, requirements analysis and system architecture software, and a number of other possible programs. In general, Database Administrators need to be highly comfortable with computers, software, programming, and telecommunications, and should be comfortable learning to use new programs quickly and at short notice. Over 75% of Database Administrators hold a Bachelor’s Degree, while over 10% hold an advanced or professional degree and some 7% hold an Associate’s Degree.
Nation-wide, the average salary of Database Administrators is $87,020 per year. However, there is considerable variation among states, with California and Washington leading the nation, with averages nearing $100,000 per year. In Idaho, on the other hand, the same individuals earn an average of just $51,000 per year. This is a fast-growing industry, with employment expected to rise by 10% to 14% in the next several years.
Below are some employment trends for Database Administrators:
- Median Salary: $41.84 hourly, $87,020 annually
- Employment: 120,000 employees
- Projected growth (2016-2026): faster than average (10% to 14%)
