Strong Interest Inventory® General Occupational Theme Code: Social (S) (GOT)
The nurturing and caring nature of educational, guidance, school, and vocational counselors is oftentimes hard to find, and it usually takes a certain kind of person to thrive in this occupation. The Introverted-Intuitive-Feeling-Judging (INFJ) Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI test) personality type, however, possesses these qualities, and in doing so, often shines in this career.
Depending on the type of counselor and service that they provide, educational, guidance, school, and vocational counselors use their learned and innate talents to provide guidance and advice to their clients and individuals in their organizations. On any given day, these counselor could be working on either social, personal, mental or behavioral abnormalities that are causing issues in an individual’s life, as well as dealing with emotional or dramatic situations that can arise because of someone’s current state. They also discuss any patterns, issues, or observations with the guardians or authority figures in the individual’s life, such as teachers, administrators, bosses, etc.
While educational, guidance, school, and vocational counselors work to discover what is ailing/prohibiting an individual from reaching their full potential, they also offer various solutions for helping these individual recover from whatever it is they are going through. They offer up opportunities for further education, provide assistance with issues of abuse, offer preventative services for those with substance abuse issues, and record instances of other problematic issues.
In order to succeed in these careers, it is helpful for counselors to have a general background in psychology, education, sociology, and/or general counseling therapy, while also being strong listeners and communicators. They must also use sound judgment and reasoning skills to assess the best solution for their clients’ well being. Extremely important as well is the ability to be sensitive and caring to other peoples’ issues and feelings, without passing judgment or offering a subjective, unbeneficial opinion.

As they provide care for students, communicate with parents and administrators, and give informational presentations, counselors will need to be able to use different kinds of hardware and software. For example, Microsoft Office Suite, web browsers, and desktop computers are all but ubiquitous. In addition, digital cameras, voice recorders, and photocopiers are valuable, as are overhead projectors and other presentation hardware.
