Hammer (1996) writes that The Extroverted-Sensing-Thinking-Perceiving ESTP Myers-Briggs Personality Type excels in fields that encourages them to use their entrepreneurial talents to accomplish measurable goals. MBTI test ESTP’s also function well in managing crises as well as promoting or selling services. While these proclivities may seem unrelated, this combination can often make ESTP’s ideal candidates for careers such as loan officers.

Loan officers are responsible for evaluating, authorizing, or recommending individuals for loans as well as advising borrowers on best approaches to particular deals or for particular clients. Accomplishing these tasks may involve analyzing the financial status of individuals or groups applying for loans, a process that may involve compiling and obtaining financial statements, credit histories, and other information. They may also need to meet either with applicants or with lenders to answer questions about the process, obtain additional information in order to make the most informed decisions, or clarify misunderstandings about types of loans or financing options that are available. Furthermore, they may also be responsible for reviewing agreements to confirm that they are in accordance with various local, state, and federal policies and practices that are in place in the best interest of applicants and lenders alike.

Loan officers use a range of different tools and technologies, including desktop, laptop, and handheld computers, as well as scanners, photocopiers, and other office supplies and machines. Additionally, they also use a variety of different kinds of software. These may include accounting software (e.g., Bottom Line LoanMaster Loan Servicing), content workflow software (e.g., Equifax Application Engine), document management software (e.g., eOriginal eCore Business Suite), financial analysis software (e.g., Experian Credinomics; Moody’s KMV CreditEdge), and the now-ubiquitous Microsoft Office suite software. While the precise program used may differ somewhat from company to company, the general categories remain fairly consistent.

Because loan officers have a variety of different responsibilities, they require a familiarity with mathematics, computer science, and electronics, as well as economics, accounting, and even customer and personal service. These various fields allow them to provide quality advice and service to applicants and potential lenders, while still ensuring that the logistics run smoothly and the technology involved does not provide a significant detriment to the task at hand. Most loan officers hold at least a high school diploma, and roughly 50% have completed at least some college as well.
