Counter and rental clerks work in a variety of different job fields, including retail, real estate, food, and hospitality. They act as a front person for the business, generally fulfilling transactions for customers. They also are the individuals who receive orders for goods or services, and then process these orders through to payment. Counter and rental clerks are often the face of the business, interacting directly with customers and discussing the product or service in question, helping customers learn about the various products before choosing the right one for themselves. Counter and rental clerks also perform administrative tasks often required of a business, such as answering telephones, explaining pricing and procedures, preparing and processing forms, and keeping detailed records of transactions and inventory. They also perform more customer-service based tasks, including arranging orders and inspecting the quality of their goods.

In order to perform their work duties well, counter and rental clerks must be well versed in certain tools and equipment, including cash registers, credit card processing machines, various database software, and smaller hand tools. They may also need to use word processing and spreadsheet software, as well as e-mail to communicate with their supervisors, co-workers, and customers. Knowledge in certain areas is also important for this career, with customer service, sales, and administration skills topping the list. Clerical knowledge is also important, as is marketing and mathematics. Clerks are often the first ones to troubleshoot client complaints or comments, malfunctioning software and hardware, and any other issues. Therefore, familiarity with such challenges is beneficial.

An eye for service and strong skills in reading and writing as well as both written and oral comprehension are imperative to engaging with customers as well, while logical reasoning and coordination also aid counter and rental clerks in their job duties. In many cases, enjoying working with others and a sensitivity for others’ reactions and feelings is also helpful for counter and rental clerks to have. Usually, no specific degree is required for jobs in this occupation, though nearly half of clerks hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
