According to Hammer (1996), Extraverted-Intuitive-Thinking-Perceiving (ENTP) Myers-Briggs test Personality Types can excel in careers that reward their need to be constantly challenged and meet with new problems to solve in the workplace. It is personality preferences such as these, among others, that often make MBTI test ENTP’s fulfilled in careers as general and operations managers.

General and operations managers coordinate a variety of different activities and initiatives in both the public and private sectors. For instance, they might be in charge of arranging the production or distribution of various products, or manage teams of staff members to successfully complete such projects. Furthermore, they may establish company-wide standards or goals, and educate employees for how they will be implemented or maintained. Some general and operations managers review financial or sales documents and develop appropriate interventions to improve the functioning of the company. Others, perhaps in more goods-oriented workplaces, instead find, choose, and acquire or purchase different goods or items for sale and resale. In short, general and operations managers can do a variety of different tasks, depending on the particular company they work for, the needs of that company, and, of course, their own personal expertise and experience.

Because they have such a wide variety of responsibilities, general and operations managers need to be able to use a variety of different kinds of hardware and software. For instance, they need to be comfortable using smart phones, copiers, scanners, and other tools for disseminating information. As with so many jobs in today’s modern workplace, computers and projectors are also absolutely essential. General and operations managers must have mastered a range of accounting and bookkeeping software (e.g., QuickBooks Pro), customer relationship management (CRM) software (e.g., Sage ACT!), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software (e.g., Deacom ERP; SAP software). While the exact software used by particular managers may differ depending on their company and the needs of that company, they will almost always require at least one kind of software in each of these categories.

General and operations managers also need a broad understanding of mathematics and economics, personnel and human resources practices, and, of course, the English language. They need to be able to understand and synthesize information from a variety of different area specializations and use them to successfully improve the functioning of their company. Additionally, general and operations managers also need solid writing, reading, and oral communication skills. Most general and operations managers develop these skills with many years of on-the-job training and perhaps in vocational schools, and about half hold either a two-year associate’s degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree.

Below are some employment trends for General and Operations Managers:
