Unlike regular civil engineers, civil engineering technicians often work in collaboration with engineers or scientists to plan and create structures of facilities that fulfill the needs of the engineers and scientists’ companies or organizations. They work to design the layouts of specific projects to best complete their designed tasks. They work under supervision to draft drawings, review design blueprints (either their own or others’), estimate and compute the amount of materials that will be needed for a project (and how much it’ll cost), and take all suggestions and complications into account. Civil engineers also make sure that codes and regulations are met throughout the design and construction process.

Along with various design and other computer software, civil engineers are also known to utilize various sampling instruments to test the materials onsite. This requires the use of many different kinds of technical instruments, from laboratory equipment like balances, pipettes, filter papers, and magnetic stirrers, to field instruments like mobile pH testers, and stress testers. In some cases, they may even need to use construction and extraction tools like machetes or land drilling rigs, or even two-way radios. Similarly, because they need to gather data in the field and analyze it in the lab or office, they may also need to use computer-aided design software, graphics software, and map creation software. While the specific tools and technologies used may differ somewhat from firm to firm or position to position, these general categories are relatively universal.
