Models fall into the Artistic Theme Code Category of the Strong Interest Inventory®. The Strong Interest Inventory® Test is designed to effectively categorize career options and match people with their best-fit career based on their interests and preferences. Since its first release in 1927, a number of researchers have significantly revised the assessment. Today the Strong Interest Inventory® is widely regarded as the leading career inventory tool available. The Artistic Theme Code is all about a passion for art, writing, drama, music, and the culinary arts as a participant as well as a spectator. People who score highly in the Artistic Theme enjoy multiple aspects of these arts at work as well as in their free time.

Models are responsible for modeling garments or other clothing, apparel, and accessories for prospective purchasers. They may pose for photographers in order to have their photographs used in magazines or other advertisements, or may do so at fashion shows, private showings, or even retail establishments. Other kinds of models, who do more artistic rather than fashionable work, may also be the subject for paintings, sculptures, or other kinds of artistic expression. In some cases, modeling jobs may involve several costume changes, so they must be able to project different personae very quickly.

Modeling is a physically intense career, and requires an astonishing attention to detail. Models often have to multi-task, which may require collecting information about pay, dates, times, and lengths of contracts from agents or other hiring managers. They also need to follow stringent regimens for diet, exercise, and even sleep in order to maintain their appearance. Finding modeling jobs may involve assembling and maintaining a portfolio of photographs, and traveling to interviews around the country and around the world. This career is also highly social, as models need to work closely with large teams, including producers, stylists, makeup artists, photographers, and others to finish photo shoots on schedule and with exceptional quality. Most models are comfortable to some extent applying their own makeup and providing feedback to other professionals on their teams. They need to be creative to develop their own brand, and to strike suitable interpretive poses for promoting and selling merchandise.

Model Salary and Career Info

Models need to be comfortable using a range of beauty supplies, including hair dryers, curling irons, brushes, combs, and other hair care supplies, as well as tweezers, makeup pencils and sharpeners, and makeup kits. Furthermore, because so much promotion is done via social networking (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Vine, LinkedIn), they need to be able to use handheld, personal, and tablet computers, as well as smart phones in order to promote their brand.

Other than being socially perceptive, Models do not require any specific areas of knowledge, or specialized skills or abilities.  Being physically fit and being able to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships are Important. It helps for Models to be comfortable working with a broad range of personality types, from highly creative artists, to young children, to logistically-oriented managers and directors. Models benefit from being highly flexible, especially in terms of scheduling. Being dependable and reliable enables them to fulfill their responsibilities regardless of stress or other emotional or logistical challenges. They do not require specialized knowledge. Almost 90% of Models hold less than a high school diploma. An additional 5% hold a high school diploma, and 7% hold an associate’s degree.

Models’ salary ranges vary enormously around the country. In New York and California, both of which have enormous fashion and performance markets, median Models’ salaries are close to $40,000. With the highest-paid Models potentially earning over $100,000 per year. In much of the rest of the country, however, they rarely earn over $22,000 per year. The employment rate of Models is expected to stay relatively static around the country, though little demographic information is available, making estimations challenging. New Hampshire and Missouri are both expected to increase their market size, but because their estimated current employment is under 100 individuals as it is, the market is extremely competitive.

Below are some employment trends for Models:

  • Median Model Salary: $13.23/hour; $27,530 annually
  • Employment: 6,000 employees
  • Projected growth (2014-2022): little to no change (-1% to 1%)
  • Projected job openings (2014-2022): 1,700
