Concierges are considered Social careers according to the Strong Interest Inventory® and its associated Assessment. This career search system has been used by numerous job seekers since its release in the early 20th century. It works by analyzing individuals’ personal preferences and proclivities and then compares their answers to those of professionals in a wide range of careers that have reported highly satisfied within their position. Based on this comparison, it then recommends one or more of six different categories of careers. For example, the Social career category may be recommended to someone who genuinely likes working with other people, takes joy in helping people solve problems or otherwise enjoy their life more.

Concierge Salary

Read about a career as a Concierge including information such as a Concierge Salary, daily tasks and other career information.

Concierges provide personal services for patrons of hotels, apartments, and even office buildings. These services may include taking messages, arranging or advising on transportation needs, providing business services or entertainment, tracking guest or resident requests for housekeeping and maintenance, and generally streamlining patrons’ lives so that they can focus on their business or lifestyle. For example, a concierge at a hotel may make reservations for a bridal party’s spa treatments, a couple’s dinner, and golf tee times for a business group. They should also know their city, including shopping, dining, nightlife and tourist or recreational destinations, so they can answer patrons’ questions accurately and help them obtain tickets for concerts, tours, or other special events. While many requests will be repetitive, Concierges may also need to search for hard-to-find items or arrange unusual services, like hot-air balloon rides.

In addition to custom requests, Concierges also provide everyday services to keep patrons’ lives running smoothly. They may need to receive or deliver luggage, mail or other items; perform office duties like scanning, cleaning or faxing; provide food or beverage services; arrange for translators, interpreters, or disability support; and plan special events, like parties, meetings, dinners and so on. Even if a Concierge cannot provide a service directly, they may be asked to arrange them, so that their patron can focus on other things.

To be successful, Concierges need to be highly organized and excellent communicators. They use a number of different tools and technologies to work accurately and efficiently. The tools will be familiar to most secretaries or office workers, including computers, fax machines, printers, mobile phones, and the like. Their software can be more complex. In addition to standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, email interfaces and web browsers), Concierges also use budgeting and billing software, scheduling interfaces, and even data entry software. They may need to maintain databases of specific patrons’ contacts, frequently used services, or even salient dates, as well as any policies or restrictions of their building or business.

Concierges need to genuinely enjoy their job in order to be successful, since they provide an essential personal service. They need to be able to converse with many different kinds of people, identify their needs quickly, and meet their patrons’ standards for high quality service. To this end, they should be able to communicate confidently in written and spoken English, and in some contexts, it may be useful to be multilingual as well. They also should be comfortable with basic business administration or human resources and be able to keep track of many responsibilities and commitments simultaneously. Most Concierges have earned a high school diploma, completed some college, or earned an associate’s degree (74% total).

The national median Concierge Salary is just over $30,000 annually, with New York leading the nation with a median nearly $44,950 per year. New York is closely followed by Massachusetts. Surprisingly, Alaska and Hawaii also have relatively high medians, both well above $35,000 annually. On the other extreme, even the highest earning Concierges in Mississippi and Kentucky earn under $35,000 annually, and their medians are both under $24,000 per year. That said, employment is expected to rise steadily, with the largest states of Florida, New York, and California projected to grow by over 20% in the next decade, adding nearly 2,000 jobs between them.

Below are some employment trends for Concierges:

  • Concierge Salary: $41.61/hour; $30,400 annually
  • Employment: 38,000 employees
  • Projected growth (2018-2028): Average (4-6%)
  • Projected job openings (2018-2028): 5,800
