Gaming Dealers fall into the Strong Interest Inventory® Test’s Conventional Theme Code Category. The Strong Interest Inventory® has been used since it was first released in 1927 to match individuals to fulfilling careers based on their work and personal preferences and reported and verified interests. The Conventional Theme Code category focuses on organizing, analyzing, and processing data. Individuals who score in the Conventional Theme Code tend to be detail-oriented, and prefer structured work environments which can provide precisely defined procedures for completing specific tasks. They also tend to resolve problems methodically, and thrive in office settings with a clear hierarchy of command and support network.
Gaming Dealers operate table games in clubs or casinos, including dice, roulette, keno, and cards, following regulations and rules specific to their locality. They are involved in all aspects of the functioning of these games, including setting them up at the beginning of the night, and closing them down before closing. They deal cards according to the game being played and determine players’ winnings. They may also apply any rule variations, and inspect cards or other game pieces to ensure they have not been tampered with in any way. If needed, Gaming Dealers may oversee the exchange of currency for chips or vice versa. If the need arises, they may have to mediate disputes that arise among players, with the goal of maintaining a peaceful playing environment. Gaming Dealers are often also the first point of contact for patrons who need support. They may need to direct players to different tables or to gaming cashiers, or answer any other questions they may have about the casinos or their amenities. Gaming Dealers also provide support for casino operations, including preparing collection reports for supervisors, training new Dealers as well as supervising staff to ensure the security of gaming tables.
The tools and technologies used for gaming dealers are specific to the games they operate, but may include baccarat, blackjack, craps, and poker tables, as well as playing cards, roulette wheels, dice, chips and other materials required by certain games. However, most Gaming Dealers will need to be comfortable using cash or ticket boxes, including Imprest Banks and Table Banks, as well as gaming management systems, such as Player Tracking System software, Progressive Gaming Chip Inventory System, Tangam Gaming TableEyeBacc, and others.
The most important knowledge of a Gaming Dealer is in customer and personal service. Because of their significant degree of customer contact, to a large extent, they are the primary determiner of the patron’s experience. A close second is a knowledge of mathematics and an ability to do mental math, particularly when calculating odds or final sums. Softer skills, such as social perceptiveness and active listening are also major assets, as is the ability to speak confidently and proficiently in English as well as any other languages spoken by one’s patrons. Communication is extremely important, whether it is with patrons, supervisors, peers, or subordinates. Providing information and being able to understand speech can be a determiner of success. Most of these requirements are not developed by advanced formal education. As such, most Gaming Dealers (60%) hold a high school diploma, and almost 40% hold no diploma. Instead, most Gaming Dealers focus on gaining table experience.
Gaming Dealers salaries vary widely across the nation. They are, on average, over $37,000 in Kansas and other central states with high degrees of gambling. At upper management levels, the most highly paid Gaming Dealers salaries can be nearly $50,000 per year. However, a Gaming Dealer’s salary can be well below $20,000, especially in the South where gambling is often frowned upon. The nation-wide employment of Gaming Dealers is expected to stay somewhat consistent between now and 2024. However, in some states, including Washington, Colorado, Texas, and North Carolina, the employment of Gaming Dealers is expected to increase by over 20% before 2024.
Below are some employment trends for Gaming Dealers:
- Median Gaming Dealer’s Salary: $9.14 hourly; $19,000 annually
- Employment: 69,000 employees
- Projected growth (2014-2024): Little or no change (-1% to 1%)
- Projected job openings (2014-2024): 18,800
