According to Hammer (1996), Introverted-Intuition-Thinking-Perceiving (INTP) Myers-Briggs Personality Types often have multiple, idealistic goals, and are able to enthusiastically exploit unplanned opportunities. Such personality characteristics, among others, result in INTP Myers-Briggs Personality Types finding fulfillment in artistic careers. Additionally, because they have high analytical skills, being in a director’s position suits them quite well. A culmination of these factors among others make INTP’s often thrive as Art Directors.
Art directors are responsible for designing visual communications for a variety of different forms of media, including for television, print, and web-based outlets. Their first task upon receiving a portfolio, client, or job is to develop a mock-up design. This should include the general style, materials, size of graphics, and so on to give other team members as well as the clients themselves an idea of the directors’ long-term visions. As additional drafts are developed, art directors may need to consult other department heads, such as those of copywriting or production, as well as the clients, to discuss additional requirements and approaches. This might also include developing presentations or “pitches” for how to approach clients or investors. Once the designs are finalized, the proposed layouts must be presented to the client.
During this process, art directors must also keep track of the accounts for various projects and make sure that logistics such as budgets and scheduling are kept in line. While they may not do the direct billing themselves, they do maintain their own records and timesheets and ensure that all aspects of projects are handled in a timely fashion.
Art directors use a variety of tools and technologies to conduct business. These tools hail from a variety of specializations, including art and drafting (e.g., charcoal pencils) and digital design (e.g. still and video cameras; notebook, laptop, and hand-held computers). They also use a range of different software, including publishing software (e.g., Quark; Adobe InDesign), graphics or photo software (e.g., Adobe Systems Illustrator; Adobe Photoshop; MAXON CINEMA 4D), and web platform software (e.g., Adobe Systems Adobe Dreamweaver; Apache Software Foundation Flex, HTML, etc.)

Art directors need to have a solid foundation in marketing, sales, communications, and computers in order to be able to effectively work with clients and other team members. They also need a working fluency in the English language, as well as any additional languages their clients or supervisors also speak. Finally, art directors need enough of a foundation in customer and personal service to be able to win their clients over and at the end of the day, conduct business while building positive relationships.
Being an art director requires considerable preparation. Most art directors hold at least a bachelor’s degree, though many hold a master’s as well. Some hold an associate’s in lieu of either, but all art directors have significant experience in their field.
