Hammer (1996) remarks that Myers-Briggs test ISTP personality types perform particularly well in careers that allow them to apply technical or scientific expertise to specific problems in order to achieve specific outcomes. This among other personality characteristics and preferences often make MBTI test ISTP’s well suited as automotive master mechanics.

Automotive master mechanics are responsible for identifying and resolving specific issues with automotive vehicles. Unlike mechanics, who service vehicles more generally, automotive master mechanics have a specialized focus on one particular component, such as air conditioning, brakes, or a radiator. When faced with a problematic vehicle, automotive master mechanics first conduct a careful inspection of the vehicle to identify the necessary repairs that must be made and to estimate their cost. This inspection may include testing the various components using electronic testing equipment, tuning the automobile to ensure proper functioning, or otherwise trying to isolate and identify the severity of a problem. In some cases, technicians may find it necessary to repair defective fuel injectors or carburetor parts, or to replace other automotive systems.

In order to be able to complete their jobs effectively, automotive master mechanics need to have developed a mastery of basic technological devices, including smart phones, laptop computers, and cameras. They also need to be able to use a variety of specialty tools like pneumatic impact wrenches and vacuum equipment, pullers, voltage and current meters, and other automotive or engineering tools. In addition, they need to be able to use database and reporting software to catalogue their actions carefully. As with any career these days, an ability to use Microsoft Office and basic email software like Gmail is absolutely essential.

Automotive master mechanics need an understanding of engineering and technology, mathematics, and mechanical tools and principles. Furthermore, a basic use of the English language is necessary to be able to communicate with clients, co-workers, and supervisors alike. Most automotive master mechanics develop these skills on-the-job, and often learn by serving as apprentices below more experienced technicians. As they become more experienced themselves, they eventually pass down their craft to apprentices as well.
