Architectural drafters work with architects, and are responsible for preparing detailed drawings, blueprints, plans, models, or sketches based on the specific requirements or frameworks provided by the lead architect. In order to do this successfully, they need to be able to successfully use computer-aided drafting (CAD) software to plan everything from broad structural designs to detailed interior layouts of commercial buildings. They may also assist architects in coordinating structural, electrical, or mechanical aspects of buildings, and may work closely with engineers, construction crews, and other technicians to do so successfully. This can result in a range of responsibilities from remote coordination to actually being present on the ground to ensure the builder’s compliance with the architect’s instructions. At a more detail oriented or micro-level, architectural drafters may be required to analyze building codes or other technical or legal documents and policies that affect various aspects of architectural designs. These data, along with the requirements from the architect must then inform the actual drafts or designs they produce.

Successful drafters use a variety of tools and technologies, including curves (both flexible and French), scales, scanners (three dimensional, backlit, and wide-format), tablet and laptop computers, and graphics cards in order to produce their required products. They may also work with Computer aided design (CAD) software, like Alias Wavefront Design Studio or Logitech 3D Pro, as well as pattern design software, like the 100 plus hatch pattern library. Photo imaging and design software, like Adobe PhotoShop, Corel Paint Shop Pro, and others are also indispensable. As with any other major career, a use of Microsoft office and an email server are absolutely essential.
