Landscape architects plan and design a variety of public and private areas, including parks and other recreational facilities, hospitals, highways, residential areas, and more. They are responsible for making sure the space looks appealing and meets the needs and purpose of that space. In order to present a convincing plan, landscape architects need to work closely with engineers, clients, and other personnel to understand the full scope of the project. After collecting all the necessary site-related data, including the location, drainage, and other details, they must begin developing graphic representations of the proposed plans that account for all of these details. Then, they develop presentations to the relevant government agencies or community groups for approval, and finally, landscape architects work closely with others to actually bold the structures and curate the grounds.

Being a successful landscape architect requires a variety of tools, hardware, and software. To gather data about the site itself, architects use digital cameras and camcorders, as well as global positioning system (GPS) receivers, laptop computers, tablets, and smartphones. They process this using Adobe Systems In-Design, and a variety of kinds of CAD software, like Google Sketch Up and Coyote. Often, photographic or graphics software like adobe Photoshop or Corel CorelDraw are also used.

They also need a broad knowledge base, spanning design, visual art, and building construction, to mathematics, engineering, and public administration. Many landscape architects choose to specialize later in their careers, but it is important to have an understanding of all of these different systems beforehand.

Because landscape architects work closely with others, both clients and colleagues, to accomplish common goals, they need strong English language communication skills, time management skills, and critical thinking skills. They also need to be comfortable making quick judgments and being able to justify them in presentations or reports to their superiors. In their day-to-day work, landscape architects must use computers, think creatively, coordinate their own activities with others, work closely with people within and external to their own organization, and above all organize and prioritize their work so that everything needed can be completed in a timely fashion. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator ENTP’s, who thrive in fast paced, challenging work environments and love working closely with others, can often excel as landscape architects.
