One Myers-Briggs® Celebrity ENTJ Personality Type is Microsoft former Chief Executive Officer and current chairman, Bill Gates.

By looking at the career and life of Bill Gates, we can see how he exhibits the qualities of the Myers-Briggs Test ENTJ Personality Type.

ENTJ Personality Types generally use their Thinking preference when communicating with and analyzing the outside world. This leads them to be logical, analytical, and objectively critical. This preference can manifest itself in those with the ENTJ Type, like Bill Gates, and cause them to be natural critics. (Myers, CPP. 1998)

During the majority of his tenure with Microsoft, Bill Gates was in charge of his company’s product strategy.  When executives would bring forth proposals that he felt put the company’s long-term interests at risk, he would be extremely critical and would force said executives to defend their position until he was fully convinced.

The ENTJ Type is often energized by stimulating interactions with others, and it is natural for them to challenge the statements and behaviors of others. Bill Gates often used this preference, even to extreme levels, to further his cause. ENTJ Personality Types are also known for using their Intuition preference to take in information through seeing the big picture. Coupled with Bill Gates’ extremely high Intelligence (he scored a 1590 out of 1600 on his SATs), this preference allowed him to create the insight that he would use in his decision-making and long-term planning for Microsoft. This ultimately led to Microsoft being one of the most successful companies of the late 20th and early 21st century, as well as turning Bill Gates into one of the richest men on the planet. (Myers, CPP. 1998)

ENTJ Types also have a strong Judging preference that pushes them to be decisive and assertive. Bill Gates has been known to set his own standards for the company and often forcefully applied them. In his early years with Microsoft, he was known to go over every line of programming code before it shipped, and would make changes at will if he did not agree with it. Bill Gates had a very clear vision of how he wanted things done, and that was how it was going to be. (Myers, CPP. 1998)

ENTJ Personality Types naturally fit into leadership positions and are known to be strategic visionaries. Bill Gates was no exception to this rule. He built a company aggressively and defended its tactics, even when charges were brought against Microsoft for creating a monopolistic environment. He was an innovative planner that stayed one step ahead of his competition. (Myers, CPP. 1998)

After stepping down from an active role at Microsoft, Bill Gates focused on another part of the ENTJ Type – that of the world-wide thinker. Over the years, Bill Gates has given billions of dollars to philanthropic efforts. He is one of a growing number of billionaires that have pledged to give away large percentages of their personal wealth to better society as a whole. The same ENTJ Type preference that made Bill Gates effective at planning for the future needs of his company helped him effectively plan for the future needs of his foundations, and society as a whole.
