INTJ Personality Type and Innovation

Innovation is a complicated process, with different steps and tasks required to effectively create ideas and see them through, and each Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® Personality Type approaches innovation in a different yet effective way. This week, we’ll discuss how the Introverted Intuition with Extraverted Thinking (INTJ) Myers-Briggs® test Type best works in the innovation process, and how they can mold themselves into better innovators.

Defining Innovation

For the sake of clarity and understanding, we will define innovation as “the implementation of ideas,” (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP), whether that means that the Myers-Briggs® Type’s skills are utilized during the idea generation process or if they are responsible for the physical implementation itself. Myers-Briggs INTJ Personality Types have incredibly creative minds, and enjoy thinking up new ideas as well as educating themselves on things entirely new to them. They enjoy mind puzzles, taking risks, and constant learning.

Top-Level Problem Solvers

Those with the Myers-Briggs Test INTJ Personality Type are incredibly adept at viewing problems as a whole, and can therefore generate ideas on how to solve these problems on a larger scale as opposed to fixing each component individually. They usually have a keen eye for right answers, choosing the correct direction for their innovation without bothering with testing out various different ideas. They are path-pavers, making way for even more innovation as they go. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

When it comes to what sort of innovation areas that INTJ Types prefer, they usually like to focus their creative outlets on innovation that can better someone or something in the long run. They establish a clear vision and then work toward that vision, using knowledge as it comes to help influence their process. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

The INTJ Type on a Mission

One thing that could get in the way of an individual that exhibits INTJ preferences is when others stunt their creative abilities, either telling them that a former idea may still work or by not acknowledging that an idea that they have could be used to make something better, even if in the smallest way possible. They also need an acceptable amount of time for their innovations, as their creative juices may not flow as freely if they are crunched for time. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

To counteract these creativity stunts, the INTJ Type can rely on others who share similar fervor for logical explanations and creative problem solving.  Those that have the INTJ Type preference also need others to respect their time and space, as they may be best at innovating when left to their own devices. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

INTJ Personality Type Strengths and Weaknesses

The INTJ Personality Type can also take the lead on improving their innovation techniques. Example actions for growth include working toward being more open in group settings instead of only working independently, having an open mind for the ideas of others, using those in their group to help you brainstorm, and letting other factors other than logic influence their innovative processes (such as intuition or minute details). By working on these tasks while still keeping their creative and critical-thinking sides at the forefront of their innovation, Myers-Briggs Test INTJ types can become even more efficient idea-generating machines. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)
