One Myers-Briggs® Celebrity ISTP Personality Type is the Actor and marital art legend Bruce Lee.

Examining his life and body of work shows how he personifies the qualities of the Myers-Briggs Test ISTP Personality Type.

An ISTP Personality Type uses his or her Thinking preference to uncover the essential structure underlying the facts. Their minds tend to work like computers, objectively reasoning and organizing data. (Myers, CPP. 1998)

Most people know Bruce Lee as a legendary martial artist and film star with a tragic ending, but he was also a very educated individual. He came from a very affluent family and studied Psychology and Philosophy, as well as other subjects, while majoring in Drama.

MBTI Test ISTP Personality Types also draws upon their Sensing preference to focus on factual reality and what can be done with it. They tend to be practical and others often see them as realists. (Myers, CPP. 1998)

Throughout Bruce Lee’s life, he learned to adjust to the situations thrown at him. As a young teenager, he was introduced to the Chinese martial art of Wing Chun under the famed tutorage of Yip Man after repeatedly getting into physical confrontations with neighborhood kids. After his life was put in serious danger, he moved to the United States to continue his education.

Similar to others of the ISTP Personality Type, Bruce Lee believed in the economy of effort. He dissected what he didn’t like in Wing Chun and added his own teachings that he found more effective and efficient when he created Jun Fan Gung Fu (Bruce Lee’s Kung Fu). Later on, after an ineffective fighting experience using his art, he came to the realization that his formal training was too rigid to be practical in a real fighting situation. He tapped back into his Thinking preference to logically analyze his shortcomings in order to come up with a better martial arts system. This led him to form Jeet Kune Do, which is based around practicality, flexibility, speed, and efficiency. The foundations of his teachings mirror his ISTP Personality Type.

The ISTP Type is known for being independent, self-determined, and confident. A quote from Bruce Lee perfectly illustrates his personification of the ISTP type when he said, “Ever since I was a child I have had this instinctive urge for expansion and growth. To me, the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of one’s potential.1 ” Until his untimely demise, he constantly worked on improving himself, both physically and spiritually – always working to improve and make himself more efficient in whatever way possible. (Myers, CPP. 1998)
