Each Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI® test) personality type has its own way of developing ideas, formulating plans to implement these ideas, and using these ideas for a greater good. This week, we’ll see how Extraverted Intuition with Introverted Feeling (ENFP) types best innovate, what their ideal position is in an innovative team, and how they can better themselves in terms of their innovation abilities.

For the purpose of clarification, we’ll define innovation as “the implementation of ideas.” This definition encompasses all variables of the innovative process, including (but not limited to) generating ideas, creating tangible plans to see these ideas through, performing physical labor to implement these ideas, etc. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP) In terms of an ENFP personality types innovative tendencies, oftentimes, ENFP types use their innovative abilities in order to better someone or something else, creating new and pioneering ideas that have the potential to make a difference.

ENFP types are energetic and exciting by nature, and they bring this same fervor to the innovative process. Often looking outside the box to find different solutions for different problems, MBTI ENFP types are always generating new ideas (even if there is no need for a new solution), and they enjoy creative environments, bringing about imagination and creativity in their own ideas and through their influences on others. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

Although idea generation is an everyday thing for Myers-Briggs ENFP types, the number of ideas that they actually follow through on is exponentially lower than those that they come up with. This could be due to a low attention span with one specific project—when they’re always thinking of new ideas, it can be hard to focus on something that came before. This thwarting of the innovation process can also be caused by a lack of support from their peers. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

ENFP personality types bring a great deal of energy to groups that innovate together, but in order to continue generating successful ideas, ENFP types need certain patience and collaboration with others who support their occasionally all-over-the-place thought processes. Others can also help ENFP types be successful by allowing their ideas to develop overtime and not rush the ENFP type into any one innovative solution. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)

For ENFP personality types to improve their innovation consistency and be proactive about seeing their innovations to completion, it is best that they remain open minded about ideas that have worked in the past, and not necessarily try to fix things in a radically way—improvement in the form of baby steps will not only help an idea along its path to completion, but it will also help MBTI ENFP types stay focused on small innovations that work together to reach an ultimate goal. ENFP types should also outline their innovative process and idea-generating techniques for their peers, so that others can see the practical and realistic applications of an ENFP types ideas. By being mindful about their innovations and the paths that they need to take, ENFP’s can become even more efficient innovators. (Killen and Williams, 2009, CPP)
